What is it ?

Merime is a little spelling checker/corrector. It is freely distribuable and free of charge. Please, if you use it, send me feedback.

How does it work ?

It doesn't have any graphical user interface. It runs under a shell. Give it the dictionary you want to use and the text to check (on the tandard input), it'll give you (on the standard output) all possibly mispelled words and possible suggestions. Ex : Merime myDic.DAG < myText.txt | more

Features

  • Detect faults exactly according to the dictionary (doen't use any statical method, as old correctors sometimes did). This means that if a word isn't in the dictionary then it will be considered as mispelled, otherwise not.
  • Gives sugestions even if the mispelled word contains several errors.
  • Uses an interchangeable dictionary database.
  • Package contains utilities to build, display dictionaries, and to add word to them once created. It also contains an utility to check if a word exists in a given dictionary.
  • Package contains also a derivated product of Merime : a crossword cheater (give it the word pattern with * - star - for each unknown letter, it'll give you all matching words of the dictionary).

  • Get the archive file (Merime.tgz). It is in format tar plus gzip.
  • tar -xvzf Merime.tgz, or mv Merime.tgz Merime.tar.gz, gzip -d Merime.tar.gz, tar -xvf Merime.tar
  • make (in each of the 2 directories obtained).

    • Note that this package is provided in unix format, butit should be recompilable under any system with a good C ANSI conpiler and flex (lexer generator). Merime was first developped on Amiga, then under Linux, and Ultrix for tests.

    Content This archive contains 2 directories with sources for :

  • The crossword cheater (directory "CrossCheat")
  • The spelling checker/corrector and misc utilities (directory "Corrector")

    • The "CrossCheat" directory only contains, after compilation, the binary of the cheater :

  • CrossCheat : the crossword cheater. It takes as argument the name of the dictionary you want to use as database. Give it word patterns, with * (star) for unknown EACH letter, it'll give you all possible words of the dictionary that match this pattern. To end, ^D...

    • The "Corrector" directory contains, after compilation, 6 executables :

  • BuildTable : the dictionary builder. Give it a SORTED ascii list of words (sorted by ascii code), it will give you a new dictionary. This may requier time on slow machines (on 150MHz Pentium, for about 250.000 words, it takes 10-20 seconds), and a lot of memory for a short time (abot 10 Mo for the 250.000 words above of the french dictionary).
  • DumpTable : the dictionary dumper. It takes a dictionary file and gives you (on standard output) the ascii list of all words in this dictionary.
  • CorrectWord : a little version of the corector. Give it some words, it will give you suggestions, even if words are in the dictionary.
  • CheckWord : just check existence of the words in the dictionary.
  • Add : add words to an ALREADY EXISTING dictionary. Give it (on the standard input) a sequenceof words, it will add them to the dictionary (and create a new extended dictionary), after having checked if the words already exist in the old dictionary.
  • Merime : THE corrector. It takes as argument the dictionary file. On its standard input, give it your text, it'll give you the list of mispelled words, with for each, the line where it is in your text, and possible suggestions.
